How Age is Calculated

Age calculation varies by culture, but this tool uses the most common system, where age increases on your birthday. For example, someone who has lived for 3 years and 11 months is considered 3 years old. They will turn 4 on their next birthday, one month later. This method is widely used in Western countries.

In other cultures, age is calculated differently. For instance, in some traditions, the current year is included in the count. So, a person who is 20 years old might also be referred to as being in their 21st year of life.

One traditional Chinese age system considers a newborn to be 1 year old at birth, with their age increasing at the Chinese New Year instead of their actual birthday. In this system, a baby born just a day before the New Year would be considered 2 years old only two days later—even though they’ve only lived for 2 days.

Note on Date Calculations

The age calculator may show varying results for months and days when dates fall at the end of a month. For example:

  • Feb 20 to Mar 20 is straightforwardly one month.
  • Feb 28, 2022 to Mar 31, 2022 can be interpreted in two ways:
    • As one month and 3 days (counting Feb 28 to Mar 28 as one month).
    • Or as one month (considering both Feb 28 and Mar 31 as end-of-month dates).

Both are valid interpretations, depending on the method. This tool uses the first approach (counting Feb 28 to Mar 28 as one month).

Similar date range quirks occur with:

  • April 30 to May 31
  • May 30 to June 30
This variation stems from the differing number of days in each month.
